Interview With Dave Seaman

todayMarch 9, 2025

There aren’t many artists who’ve soundtracked the birth of dance music and are still leading its development more than three decades later. There are even less who have gifted both the club and pop scenes with unforgettable musical moments that get talked about in hushed tones years after their creation. Dave Seaman is one of a select few.

Whether it’s one of his spine-tingling Global Underground or Renaissance CDs that’s still burning a hole in your stereo years after its purchase, or the perfect pop of Kylie’s ‘Confide In Me’ that he co-wrote, produced and remixed, there’s very few with their heart in electronic music who haven’t been touched by his oeuvre in one form or another.

Getting to know Dave Seaman

Introduce yourself in a few sentences.
Ok just for the sake of variation, I asked Chat GPT to answer this one for me and to be fair, I think it’s done a far more entertaining job than my usual staid standard response…

“Hey there, I’m DJ Dave Seaman, bringing you the finest in electronic dance music from the heart of the dancefloor. With years of spinning some of the biggest tracks and crafting unforgettable nights, I’m here to keep the beats pumping and the energy high. Whether it’s a deep house groove or a soaring trance anthem, I’m all about creating an immersive experience that makes you move. Let’s get this party started!”

Is there a story behind your artist name?
No not really, it’s just my name. Do you think I’d choose Dave Seaman as an alias?!

Do you have any other aliases past of present?
Brothers In Rhythm, Ewan Hoo’s Army, Brothers Luv Dubs, Creative Thieves, Group Therapy, Nunchi Coup.

Tell us about your first performance opportunity and how it fueled your passion..
I was 13 years old. It was for a 12 year old’s birthday party at St. Mary’s Church Hall in Garforth, Leeds in 1981 using one dansette turntable and a tape deck to go from one track to the next. I seem to remember Men At Work’s ‘Down Under’ was the biggest track of the night. I was forever hooked from that moment onwards.

How would you encourage emerging artists wanting to break through?
Be patient but persistent, focussed and humble, and surround yourself with the best team of like-minded, talented people you’re able to recruit. Most of all, enjoy the ride. The destination is sometimes not as memorable as the adventures along the way.

Share your favourite clubbing memory.
Jeez. Too many to remember. I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some amazing parties. One that does instantly spring to mind though is Renaissance’s 2nd birthday at The Que Club in Birmingham. I vividly remember being up in the rafters at the very back of the club, high above everything that was going on and having a moment of clarity that this scene that we’d all been living and breathing for the previous few years was really only just beginning. It wasn’t just another passing fad. This cultural revolution was here to stay. And true enough, here we still all are.

Provide an outlandish rider (be creative).
Bubble Wrap Room: A whole room lined with bubble wrap that must be popped only by the DJ during their performance for optimal energy release.

Miniature Theme Park: A small-scale, fully functional theme park with a roller coaster, carousel, and funhouse mirror maze, set up backstage for the DJ’s relaxation and inspiration before the show.

Floating DJ Booth: A DJ booth that levitates three feet off the ground, supported by a system of invisible wires or magnetic fields, giving the illusion of floating while performing.

Custom Mascots: A set of personalized mascots that resemble mythical creatures of the DJ’s own design, complete with elaborate costumes and choreographed dance routines to perform during the set breaks.

Mystical Ice Sculptures: A series of intricate ice sculptures, including a DJ booth and various mythical creatures, which must be melted and refrozen in a specific ritualistic pattern before each performance.

Teleportation Pods: Two “teleportation pods” that resemble futuristic transport devices, used for quick entry and exit from the venue, complete with faux sci-fi sound effects and light shows.

Personal Art Gallery: An art gallery showcasing surreal and abstract works of art created specifically for the DJ, with interactive installations that respond to the music being played.

Customized Light Show: A light show that synchronizes not just with the music but also with the DJ’s heartbeat, monitored in real-time through a discreet wearable device.

Personal Weather System: A small-scale weather system that can create a light mist or gentle snowfall on stage, adjusted to match the DJ’s mood and the vibe of the performance.

Reversed Gravity Zone: A special “reversed gravity” zone where the DJ can experience a sensation of weightlessness during their set, using special equipment to simulate zero-gravity conditions.

Describe yourself using a famous quote..
Oh, this is definitely another one for Chat GPT..

“We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams’ by Arthur O’Shaughnessy — always pushing the boundaries, crafting the beats that make people move, and dreaming big in the world of electronic music.”

Or how about this one?
“Music is the shorthand of emotion’ by Leo Tolstoy — through my beats and mixes, I translate the depths of feeling into rhythm and sound, connecting with listeners on a profound level.”

HaHa! Couldn’t have put it better myself.

Which song do you wish you’d written? (Include a YouTube link)
‘Gorecki’ by Lamb:

Music is…
The great communicator, the universal language, the healing force.

Tell us about your plans for 2025.
I’ve just released an extended, more DJ friendly version of our debut single ‘Voice Recognition’ under the Ewan Hoo’s Army alias, which is a new artist project with John ‘Quivver’ Graham that is more songwriter-led and a little less dance floor focused. Plus, there’s a remix by Trilucid that is getting huge club and DJ support too. Listen here

Last month, I also released a new solo single on Franky Wah’s Shen Label called ‘Venus Flytrap’ featuring Car Golden which has been a staple in my sets over the last 6 months. There are more singles scheduled on my own Selador label, Sudbeat, Mobilee, Music To Die For and more leading up to the summer.

And I’m going to be very busy touring for pretty much most of the year. We’ve got lots of events planned with Selador in Glasgow, Amsterdam, Birmingham and our Ibiza residency at Akasha, plus I have shows in North and South America including incredible venues like Stereo in Montreal, Bar Americas in Guadalajara and Flash in Washington DC, and amazing festivals like Noisily, Bestival and Balance Croatia. Plus, I have further Club Symphony Orchestral shows with my Brothers in Rhythm partner Steve Anderson in Australia and Ireland for Lush!.

More than enough to keep me busy!
